I studied Mathematics at the University of Manchester and after graduating in 2015, I moved to Paris for a year to learn French, which had always been a dream of mine. After returning, I was keen to look for a graduate job and begin my career.
When looking for a graduate job, there was almost too much choice, so I decided to focus on something which would combine my technical and problem solving abilities with my communication skills and my love of getting to know people.
Having enjoyed working in the hospitality industry at a Hilton Hotel whilst studying, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t just going into a career where I would be ‘number crunching’ and in the background. I knew I wanted a career that would allow me to engage with clients and where client relationships were highly valued. I also wanted a role that would vary from day to day and challenge me at every opportunity.
Another important factor for me was to be in a role where I would be given the opportunity to study towards a well-recognised professional qualification. This was important to me, as it would give me the ability to continue testing myself and give me a clear vision of where my career was heading.
A career in financial planning ticks each of the boxes on my ‘ideal role’ checklist. I believe that being involved in helping clients define their lifelong goals and helping them make decisions and choices, which make achieving these goals possible, is very rewarding. As a Trainee Financial Planner, I am developing knowledge in all areas of finance, such as tax and estate planning, investments and, retirement planning. I will learn to understand trends and identify potential risks, and combine all this analysis in order to present sound recommendations, meaning I have a huge amount of responsibility and trust within my role.
I couldn’t think of a better company to begin my career with. I was drawn to Paradigm Norton because of their ‘client first’ mentality which resonated with what I wanted in a role. Everybody I met during the recruitment process at Paradigm Norton spoke so highly of the team and the environment here, you notice it isn’t just clients first, its people first. Since beginning here I can feel that it isn’t just a work team, it’s a family. Everybody is supportive and encouraging and always there to help, with anything at all.
Every day here is different and I am continuously learning new things. I am enjoying studying for my exams and I am excited to see where my future at Paradigm Norton takes me, as I know my learning has only just begun. I hope to complete my Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning in April 2018 and then to continue studying towards becoming a Chartered Financial Planner. I am looking forward to meeting more clients and getting more involved with the decisions they make and the advice we provide. As long as I am pro-active, I feel there is no end to the opportunities available to me, here at Paradigm Norton and as a young Trainee Financial Planner.
